On Monday, September 21, 2026, Mr. Sheikh Jaafar Sheikh Mustafa, Vice President of the Kurdistan Region, participated in the ceremony of unifying the Peshmerga forces.
The ceremony was held at the Kurdistan Regional Presidency in the presence of Nechirvan Barzani، President of the Kurdistan Region and Commander-in-Chief of the Peshmerga Forces، Masrour Barzani، President of the Kurdistan Regional Government، Qubad Talabani، Deputy Prime Minister of the Kurdistan Regional Government، Shorsh Ismail، Minister of Peshmerga، Abdul-Amir Shammari، Director of the Office of the Commander-in-Chief of the Iraqi Armed Forces، and a number of military and government officials.
At the ceremony، the unification of the Kurdistan Peshmerga Force was officially announced within the framework of a joint understanding between the U.S. Department of War and the Kurdistan Regional Government، which will be under one commander-in-chief and within the framework of the Ministry of Peshmerga، which includes two regional commanders، eleven military divisions and two support forces، and will carry out their affairs as a constitutional force.
